When the situation is still taking shape
You can seek advice before you have a complete file.
You may have a voicemail from an officer, a report number or a request to meet. You may not know whether police see you as a witness or someone they suspect. Explain that uncertainty when you contact counsel. You can ask for legal advice before deciding how to discuss the event.
A police report number and a court case number serve different purposes. If charges are filed, the court file will help identify the charge and hearings. Before then, a lawyer may need to learn more about the inquiry and the papers you received.
Florida's Constitution protects against being forced to give evidence against yourself in a criminal matter. How that protection applies depends on the situation. Keep any written notice and ask counsel about your rights and any duty to respond. See Article I, section 9.
A request to speak
Keep the caller's name, agency, message and stated reason for contact. Tell counsel whether you have already given a statement.
A written notice
Keep the whole document, including dates, conditions and instructions. A general website cannot tell you what your particular notice requires.
An incomplete account
Write down what you remember and identify the gaps. Separate what you saw from what another person told you.
An official place to check a filed case
What Indian River County's online records can tell you.
The Clerk's Online Case View lets the public search civil, criminal and traffic cases. It can show charges, court dates and case documents. Public court-record access does not require registration.
Some case types and documents are restricted. The Clerk lists juvenile cases among those unavailable to the public in eCaseView, with an exception for the attorney of record. A search result therefore cannot be treated as the complete picture of every matter.
If you find your case, keep the case number and copies of relevant entries. If you cannot find it, tell your lawyer how you searched and what papers you have. A missing result does not establish that an inquiry has ended.
Use court records to help prepare for a conversation. They do not replace the current notice, release order or advice about what you should do.
How the facts connect to the charge
Build a clear account from the available records.
A lawyer needs more than the accusation's name to assess a defense. The review asks who was involved, when events happened and what the state must prove. A record may support your account, raise a concern or leave a question open.
Our Florida criminal defense practice covers a range of charges. In a Vero Beach matter, the type of allegation helps decide which records deserve closer attention.
A stop or a DUI allegation
The reason for the stop, officer observations, video and test records may matter. Bring a license notice too. Its process can be separate from the criminal case.
An allegation involving drugs
Identify where the item was found and who had access to that place. Counsel can review the search, testing and the facts said to connect the item to you.
A disputed encounter
For battery or domestic allegations, the events before and after the encounter may add context. Keep messages, photos and witness details, as well as any contact restrictions.
Property, money or permission
Theft and fraud allegations may turn on ownership, authority, value or intent. Receipts and complete communications can help clarify what each person understood.
Keep the original material when possible. Do not delete or edit records to make an account look clearer. Tell your lawyer about difficult facts as well as helpful ones so the review addresses both.
If you receive a DUI suspension notice, have it checked promptly. Florida's administrative suspension law allows a request for formal or informal review within 10 days after the notice is issued. The criminal court date is separate.
Local court reference
Confirm where your Indian River County case belongs.
The Indian River County Clerk's criminal-court guide separates felony cases in Circuit Court from misdemeanors and criminal traffic cases in County Court. Juvenile proceedings also follow their own requirements.
Indian River County is part of Florida's Nineteenth Judicial Circuit. The county courthouse is at 2000 16th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32960. The Circuit's courthouse directory confirms the address.
Use the hearing notice to confirm the date, courtroom and whether attendance is in person or remote. The courthouse's general address does not answer every reporting question. Have counsel resolve anything unclear before the hearing.

When more information becomes available
Ask what a new record changes about the next decision.
A witness statement, video or filed charge may change what needs attention. Ask your lawyer how the new information affects the defense and what still needs to be checked. Keep counsel informed about new notices or contact from an agency.
If there is an offer to resolve the case, ask for an explanation of its terms and consequences. Discuss the evidence, possible legal challenges and the choices available before making a decision. No lawyer can promise a dismissal or a particular sentence.
Tell counsel about school, work, a professional license or other responsibilities that the case may affect. Those facts can help frame the questions to address. They do not guarantee an exception to a court order or hearing requirement.
Questions about an incomplete or developing record
What can I learn before deciding how to respond?
Can I call a lawyer if police have contacted me but have not arrested me?
Yes. Tell the lawyer who contacted you, what was requested and whether you received a written notice. Ask for advice before discussing the event. The lawyer can assess your situation without assuming that a charge has already been filed.
Does a missing online case mean the investigation is over?
No. The public court search has limits, and an inquiry may not yet have a filed court case. Keep the report number or other papers and ask counsel how to check the matter's status. Do not infer closure from a blank search result.
Should I bring full messages or just the screenshots that support my account?
Keep the full conversation and original records when possible. Cropped images can leave out dates or context that your lawyer needs to review. Ask how to share material securely, and avoid changing or deleting the original.
Can I find my child's juvenile case in the public court search?
The Indian River County Clerk says juvenile cases are unavailable to the public in eCaseView, except for the attorney of record. Ask counsel about the proper way to obtain information for your child's matter rather than relying on the public search.
Can a lawyer assess a plea offer from a docket entry alone?
A short court entry may not contain the offer's full terms or the evidence needed to assess it. Share the written offer and relevant papers with counsel. Ask about the obligations, risks and choices before agreeing to resolve the case.
Legal help starts with understanding the situation
Bring the question you need answered first.
Tell Katz & Associates whether you are dealing with an inquiry, a filed charge or a new decision in an existing case. Mention any response date or hearing when arranging the conversation. You can call 772-933-5289 or choose a time to speak.
The firm's Treasure Coast office is at 770 SE Indian Street, Suite A-16, Stuart, FL 34997. Ask how meetings and case updates would work for your Vero Beach matter. The About page introduces the firm.
Before hiring the firm, discuss who would handle your case, the proposed work and the legal fee. Confirm the payment terms and whether trial or a separate license matter adds work or cost. You can also reach the team through the contact page.
Request a criminal defense consultation
Leave your name, contact details and the type of help you need. Ask about a suitable way to share sensitive papers or evidence.
This is general information, not advice for your case. Sending a web form does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship.
